Valencia is Spain’s third largest metropolitan area, with a population ranging from 1.7 to 2.5 million depending on how the metropolitan area is defined (Camp del Turia, Horta Oeste, Horta Nort, Horta Sur…).
The city is home to around around 800.000 inhabitants, all in which reside within 19 districts and 87 different boroughs of Valencia.
Today, a little trip in one of the district of Valencia : Extramurs is divided into 4 boroughs : Arrancapins, el Botanic, la Petxina and la Roqueta. .
Before deciding on a particular borough, you must first decide what kind of amenities are most important for you when moving to Valencia. Do you want to rent an apartment in Valencia in a busier area with much going on and many things to do within walking distance or would you prefer a more quiet residential neighborhood ?
Each location offers many amenities including shopping, dining, nightlife and more. Each borough has it’s own feel and character.
Arrancapins :
Arrancapins is one of the neighbour of the district of Extramurs, south-west of Valencia, not far from the Eixample and the Ciutat Vella. Extramurs is mainly residential. The district of Arrancapins is relatively old, more than half of the properties were built between 1900 and 1960. However the majority of the buildings are now renovated. This is the case of one of the neighborhood’s symbols: the Finca Roja, which was renovated in 2011. A large red residential complex, designed by the architect Enrique Viedma in the mid-1930s. The area is close to the city center of Valencia, well connected by bus and metro (Àngel Guimerà, Plaça d’Espanya and Bailén).
Benefits : Quiet neighbourhood close to the down-town. There are many shops, restaurants, bars, terraces. The rents are reasonable (many flats under 600 €). A residential and family area.
Drawbacks : Some streets are dirty and dark (lack public lightimg). There are few green spaces. Rare parking spaces.
El Botànic :
The Botànic is another neighborhood of the district of Extramurs. It owes its name to the botanical garden in the heart of the district, right next to the Natural Science Museum. The Botànic adjoins to the west the district of Ciutat Vella. It is separated from the large shopping center Nuevo Centro, only by the Garden of the Turia. Its proximity to the city center allows it to be well served by public transport: bus and metro (Túria and Àngel Guimerà).
Benefits : Great location, not far from the center and the gardens of Turia. The Botanical Garden. Apartments fairly large (more than 70m2).
Drawbacks : Difficult to park there. Noisy and dirty area. Few properties available for rent.
La Petxina :
The Petxina is the third district of the district of Extramurs. It lies to the west of the Botanic district, and to the north of the district of Arrancapins. It owes its name to the promenade of La Pechina, which runs along the Turia Gardens (Paseo Petxina). Because of its proximity to the city center, and the Turia, it is a very pleasant area to live with family. For sports enthusiasts, do not miss the new Sports and Cultural Center of Petxina. Like the Botànic, it is well provided by public transport: bus and metro (Túria and Àngel Guimerà).
Benefits : Very well located, a stone’s throw from the city center and the Turia. A quiet and peaceful neighbourhood.
Drawbacks : Difficult to park there. Few properties available for rent.
La Roqueta :
La Roqueta is the last area that makes up the Extramurs district. The neighborhood is enclosed between the neighborhoods of Sant Francesc, Russafa and Arrancapins. If you are a newcomer to Valencia, you will necessarily go to this area. Indeed, it is in this district that’s the police station Calle Bailen, to obtain your NIE or Certificado de Registro. There is also the main station « estación del Norte ». La Roqueta is a residential and commercial district. It is very well connected by bus and metro (Plaça d’Espanya, Bailén and Xàtiva).
Benefits : Great location, close to the town center and Russafa. The apartments are relatively spacious (+ 80m2.
Drawbacks : Difficult to park there. Few properties available for rent.
